This is the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, England. and the big dish that you can see is the Lovell Telescope. It’s not an early domestic satellite dish!!
The Telescope was constructed in 1955 and was the largest steerable dish telescope in the world at 76.2meters in diameter. Now in 2013 it is the third largest in the world. At least, that is what Wikipedia says!!
I just liked how big it is compared to the neighbouring houses!
That’s a very fascinating image – the telescope looks alien in that landscape. The powerful cloud formations in the sky enhance the mysterious atmosphere. Fabulous image!

i love the low line of the horizon and the powerful cloudscape of the flat landscape. i find the location of this famous observatory amidst the private houses rather incongruous … as if someone had built an oversized ham radio aerial for themselves … 😉

Whoa! What a great standout in this capture! Your last line took the words right out of my mouth. I love the dimension that the clouds have, which also give this composition some depth as well.
Great looming sky – that big cloud looks almost like an alien spaceship, come to check what’s going on. The dish was designed by the Sheffield engineering company, Husband, whose offices are now part of the University and are about 300 yards away from where I’m typing this 🙂
