Avebury stone circles

Sone circles at Avebury at dawn. Wiltshire, UK

These are some of the standing stones that make up the stone circles in the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, England. Very roughly they were put there 4-5000 years ago, and at various stages of the history of the circles people have attempted to knock them down…and put them back up again, all dependent on cultural practices and/or religious beliefs.

This photograph was taken at dawn, there is still frost on the grass….and I got lucky with the sky. I actually cycled here before dawn from a nearby farm campsite…..which was about 8 miles away on a nearby main road….but it was pitch black and I missed the turn off about 4 or 5 times…..By the time I got here I had to just leg it to any old stone and hope to get a decent photograph…..not very well planned, but I was quite happy with what I got.
