An easy way to create balanced photographs

Gallery: symmetry in Photography

How simple alignment can create striking images.

Use symmetry to transform everyday scenes into compelling images.

Symmetry is often overlooked in composition discussions, especially when asymmetry and the rule of thirds grabs everyone’s attention, with its promise of a quick fix for your photography.

But as you’ll see in this gallery, symmetry can be one of the most visually powerful tools at a photographer’s disposal.

This collection showcases some of my symmetrical compositions – photographs where everything is naturally balanced.

What defines a symmetrical photograph is very simple:

  • The Left side of the image is a mirror image of the right side of the image
  • And then you can use those balanced, Mirrored backgrounds by waiting for some moving foreground objects to enter the frame.
  • Symmetry isn’t a static composition that’s boring and obvious. When used well, it creates a kind of blank canvas that allows movement, emotion, and story to shine through.

These photos reflect how I use symmetry as a way to guide the viewer’s eye clearly and with precision.

So yes, I love symmetry! and you should too.
